LABOUR PARTY’S SUPPORT
REFORMER’S SUGGESTION DENIED
NO PRO All SE FROM GOVERNMENT
(By Wire —Parliamentary Reporter.) Wellington, Last Night.. Repudiation of . a suggestion by'Mr. W. Downie Stewart that the United Government was following the line of least resistance and relying on the Labour Party to give effect to its policy was made in the House of Representatives this morning by the Acting-Prime Minister, the Hon. E. A. Ransom. Such a statement, said Mr. Ransom, was unworthy of Mr. Stewart. He did not think there was any indication that the present Government had pursued such a course.
“So far as our relying on the support of the Labour Party is concerned,” he said, “i want to say here and now that we rely on the good sense of the members of the House, and if we depended on the support of the Labour Party or any other party to get our measures through we should not be deserving of support. Every member of the House, whether he is a member of the Opposition or Labour Party, has the right to vote according to his conviction®, and not according to any promise given by the present Government.’-
