HEALING WITHOUT MEDICINE

LECTURE BY MR. W. HOLMES. •••.■' ' ; • An increasing number of people are attending the lectures by Mr. Holmes, a.nd the enthusiasm of the audiences is ’ growing more marked. The speaker-dis-plays a wonderful knowledge of his general theme, and his lecture last night was fillecK. with that subtle humour which is the rare gift of the artist with words. “The records of medical practice show constant changes and absurd practices,” he said. “While the giving of a potionfor headache made from a murderer’s skull is no longer a part of medical practice, still it is not uncommon to find reputable physicians at the present time • recommending mud baths (a dirty practice) or eating sand, and the taking of placebas, or. bread pills, and so forth, for various ailments, liven in surgery it is a fact that the larger percentage .of operations prove to be unecessary, and harmful because of ■ the . mental shock which the patient sustains. In the majority of c..:es the nervous shock is far worse than the suffering from the malady. ' “However, the medical profession as a whole has for its aim the banishment of disease and is earnestly attempting to bring about this desired end. One means of healing, and one alone, has 1 existed throughout the ages as the only . solvent for human ailments, and that is mental healing. A knowledge of the science of mind is the only permanent and successful means of healing the sick.”

The lecturer gave instances of how the mind works on the body and produces certain diseases through holding a certain form, of thought.. The final lecture Ao-night; will be on “The Seven, Gates to Happiness.” There will also be an afternoon talk to-day at 2.30.
