ENTERING BUSINESS LIFE

EXAMINATION URGED

DOMINION SYSTEM PROPOSED

STANDARD NOW UNSATISFACTORY

SUGGESTION FROM BUSINESS MEN

By Telegraph.—Press Association.

The Hermitage, Last Night. A declaration that there was a definite need for examination of a man who was entering a commercial career was made by Mr. A. O. Wilkinson, Christchurch, in moving a Canterbury/remit at the conference of the Chambers of Commerce here to-day. A paper on such examinations was Aven by Mr. E. R. Render on behalf of the Wellington Chamber prior to the presentation of the remit by Canterbury, which was:— (I) That this conference*endorses the principal of commercial examinations and the adoption of a syllabus similar to that in use by the Wellington chamber.

(2) That with a vievy to making tlie examinations Dominion-wide value a scheme be inaugurated by which a standard certificate will be issued, to students by the Associated Chambers of Commerce for the whole Dominion, steps being taken to arrange for candidates iu° various centres to be entered for examination under such coordinated scheme.

(3) That a committee be set up tor the purpose of codifying definite proposals for a scheme of commercial examinations under the auspices of the Associated Chambers. ;

Mr. Wilkinson said that the scheme operating in Wellington if adopted, generally would do a vast amount of good. The remit was opposed by Mr. P. B. Foote, Timarti, who stated that if the executive gave attention to the remits already passed it would have its hands, full. He thought if the chamber endeavoured to obtain an alteration of the present high’ school and technical school systems it would achieve the object sought. He moved as an . amendment that the executive take action along the lines of having the desires met as regarded certificates for commercial purposes undertaken by high schools and technical schools. The amendment was seconded by Mi. D. Rufjeffge, Invercargill, who agreed they should utilise existing facilities. Mr. C. M. Bowden, Masterton, said that if some effort were made to improve the spelling of typistes much good would result. ' / . - , None of them was satisfied with ttie standard of pupils, leaving schools and Sting into business Louses, said Mr. acnin, Christchurch. It would be a good thing if there were a general Business standard throughout the Dominion. -

The amendment was defeated and the remit was carried. A committee of three wae set up as outlined in the remit.
