KAPONGA TOWN BOARD

THE MONTHLY MEETING HELD. The first monthly meeting of the newly elected Kaponga Town Board was held on Tuesday evening, the following being present: Messrs. A. R. Bates, R. A. Law, J., P. Gibson, H. J. Mills, W. Marr and W. G. Gran.

The chair was taken by the clerk, who asked for nominations for the position of chairman. Mr. Bates was ejected unopposed, this making his third term. Mr. Law was agajin elected deputy chairman, also being his third term. The other committees were-filled by appointment as foilqwp.-AFinance, Messrs. Law, Gibson and W. G, Gran; - works, 'Messrs. E. L. Abbott (chairman), H. J. Mills and W. Marr.

The chairman deferred to the loss the board had sustained by the death of Mr. A. J. Herbert, especially in his position of chairman of the works committee where his valuable help and services would bo much missed. A letter was received from Mr. C. A. Corder, secretary of the Kaponga Boy Scout troop, asking for permission for the free use of the town hall supper-room on ifhe occasion of the annual meeting topight. A letter was forwarded from the member for the district, Mr. C. A. Wilkinson, stating that the Minister of Public Works had approved of the subsidy on account of work done for relief of unemployment in Kaponga. A circular letter was received from thp organiser of the Porirua Sfental Hospital radio fund soliciting donations. It was regretted that the board could make no grant from btferd monies, but it was decided to open a subscription list at the board’s office.

The electrical engineer reported: Both power plants maintained a continuous supply throughout the month, but repairs were found necessary to the governor of No. 1 turbine and the slip-rings of No. 2 generator. These troubles, while expected to recur, have for the present been dis* posed of. A total of 50,720 units was generated by No. 2 plant, being an increase of approximately 10,000 on the previous month’s output, and a purchase of bulk power to the extent of 1590 units plus 45 k.v.a. at a cost of £l6 4s was found necessary. This latter figure is roughly £4 less than that for the same period of last year. Minor troubles only have been met with on the lines, and a few more consumers’ service lines were put into order to assist in obviating spiall interruptions in the service. One lighting consumer, one range, ope water heater and one pump motor were added to the system. 1

Arising out of a report submitted by the town clerk on activities of the board’s municipal cinema operations owing, to the Wednesday evening programmes not being run at even a small margin of profit, the board decided there was no option, but to discontinue showing on tfiat night, hence the last showing of Wednesday pictures will ■be October 29. The question of installing “talkie” pictures was the subject of 3 lengthy debate. Action was deferred tq the next meeting of the board.

The tender of Mrs. I. Evans for the lease of the municipal pictures cafe for the ensuing 12 months was accepted.
