CONSTITUTION OF INDIA

KING TO OPEN THE CONFERENCE.

ACTION UNDER NEW ORDINANCE.

British Wireless. Rugby, Oct, 21. The India Oilice announces that the King-Emperor has been pleased, to express his intention to inaugurate tlie proceedings of the Indian Round Table Conference. The first meeting will take place at noon >,on November 12 in the Royal Gallery of the House of Lords. The Government of India’s appreciation of the situation up to October 18 says that prompt action has been taken in the Bombay Residency under the ordinance promulgated on October 10. A large number of organisations that played a prominent part in the civil life of the disobedience movement have been declared unlawful and the police have occupied the headquarters of the more important of them. The immediate result of the action taken under the ordinance has been definitely to discourage the movement. Evidence from various sources confirms a decline of the popular enthusiasm and growth of dissatisfaction against the Congress methods. A sure sign of the decreasing interest is the growing tendency for convicted persons to obtain a remission of their sentences by offering apologies and pledges of future abstention from lawless activities. In Bengal alone more than 2000 prisoners have been so released. . Despite the efforts made to belittle the round table conference and to hold up to contempt the Indian delegates who are attending it there is increasing recognition of its importance.
