MATAU NOTES
The very tempestuous weather that has prevailed recently has caused the roads to be cut up very badly. ■ It is understood that there is a possibility of several feet being taken off the top of Walker’s Hill on the North Matu Road. There is also another bad corner ■by the Ra'ka stream road tunnel, where the road takes an exceedingly efliarp turn. Below there is a sharp drop of 20 feet over the waterfall. ■Some of the settlers who have ragwort on their properties have invested in sodium chlorate and are hoping for happy results. There is little of this weed in the district, as all the settlers run sheep, but in the cow paddocks an occasional patch may be seen. The Strathmore weed, which was -serious at Matau some years ago, has almost disappeared and foxglove is also going. The farmers of Matau have finished their lamb docking and are preparing for shearing operations as soou as the weather permits.
ELTHAM THEATRE. “THE GOLDEN CALF.”
Hailed as one of the best comedies of the year, .“The Golden Calf” will'show at the Eltham Theatre to-night. It is a gay story of Bohemian life among artists and their models in New York’s famous Greenwich Village, and the staging of the illustrators’ ball gives opportunity to introduce several spectacular musical numbers. It has. evrything that goes to make a good musical comedy —youth, beauty, romance, comedy, scintillating tunes, dazzling dances and spectacular specialities. El Brendel, •of “Sunnyside Up” fame, in “A Picture no Artist can Paint,” is worth the almiftsion alone. Sue Carol with an all Star cast and a chorus of 100 of the most talented and beautiful dancing girls puts a fine finish to a fine picture.
