NEW LIGHTHOUSE STEAMER
PASSENGERS DEBARRED. \ VICE-REGAL ACCOMMODATION, ’ J ■ | - No passenger accommodation other than that for the Vice-Regal party is provided, for on the new Government lighthouse steamer Matai, which is due at Wellington from England shortly. This statement was made in the House of Representatives by the Minister of Health, the Hon. A. J. Stallworthy, in a reply made by him on behalf of the Minister of Marine, the Hon. J. B. Donald, who was temporarily absent. Mr. W. E. Barnard (Labour— Napier) asked whether the Matai would carry passengers, as was done by toe Tutanekai, which was being replaced. It had been reported .that the vessel would not carry passengers and the statement had caused a certain amount of apprehension among intending travellers. Mr. Stallworthy said the only passenger accommodation on the vessel would be for the Governor-General and his suite. It had been found that toe carrying of passengers considerably hampered the work on a ship employed as a lighthouse tender.
