(By “Moturoa.”) Sportsmen throughout Taranaki will have the Waverley annual gathering to interest them on Labour Day and, judging by the great fields weighted, there is every prospect of the fixture being one of the best held by the club. Paratoo will now not be eligible for the maiden event, but with Lady Lulu, Biflex, Prince Desmond, Ngapara, Kilting and others engaged a good race should be the result. Lady Quex has a stiff impost in the Brewer Handicap, but if the track is good the New Plymouth candidate is a likely starter. Freehold, Te Atiawa, Chief Link, Melissa, Green Linnet, Just an Idea, Hopwood and Bonogne haye all given promise this season and should make the event interesting. Sixteen have been weighted for the Waverley Cup, with last year’s winner, Mendip, at the top of the list. Cashier, Ruanui, Manly (who won in 1928), Orazone arid Kawhakina have proved their ability to run out the distance. Then there are Arisus, Joyspear and Paratoo, who promise to develop into useful middle-distance performers. Royal Damon, Tenacre, Goblin Market and Calithe should have something to sav if started in the hack hurdle race, while other hack races on the programme have drawn horses of the calibre of Zarene, Royal Routine, Callapat, Orapai, Tentcall, Patcaroa, Lady Lulu (sprints), and Arisus, Joyspear, The Warden, Royal Finance, Paratoo, Monaloff, Auctioneer, Crennatown, Banbridge -and ginger (middle-distance races). Acceptances for all events close with the secretary, Mr. W. MacFarlane, AVav♦rley, nt 9 o’clock to-night. The Waverley telegraph office closes at 5 p.m.
