STRATFORD RELIEF WORK.
IMPROVEMENT OF STREET.
During an inspection of the borough of Stratford yesterday the foreman (Mr. L, B. Davis) drew the attention of a Daily News reporter to the excellent work done as a relief measure to assist the unemployed. All who knew Ariel Street of a year ago will be pleasantly surprised to stroll along the neat footpaths and observe the level stretch of fine road formation. About £2OO has been spent on this short street, but for their money ratepayers have had 3080 cubic yards of earth moved from the abrupt rises which have now disappeared in levelling and embankment. The new road is 42ft Wide and contains 13ft of graded footpath on each side and 15ft of gently sloping bank. Further evidence of the good work accomplished 'by the men was encountered in Orlando Street, which , has been reformed practically from Regan Street to Pembroke Road. This street was previously in what amounted to two sections with a winding strip of road between. Now, after 4000 yards of earth has been moved and a 17ft filling completed, it runs smoothly all the way and the steep rise has dissolved into a. gem tly graded slope up which the road accompanies the new footpaths; /About midway along this street there is a second filling averaging 10ft for 25ft and here a new tunnel has been pierced to drain the water of a swiftly flowing stream.
In other quarters of the town the exigencies of unemployment have proved beneficial to residente, ’and must be acknowledged that the towifTis a whole has Hot lost or wasted the money.
