SINGAPORE NAVAL BASE

DECISION OF CONFERENCE

FASTER WORK NECESSITATED

DOMINIONS’ DESIRES MET

AIR DEFENCE AND WIRELESS

By Telegraph—Press Assn.— Copyright. London, Oct. Id-

The first meeting was held to-night of the Imperial Conference Committee on the Singapore naval, base. The committee decided to advance the construction of the base.

The British Government informed the Dominion delegates that the construction of the Singapore docks would not be completed in the contract time. Thus the conference’s first important decision was reached.

Mr. Snowden presided and Messrs Henderson, Shaw and Alexander, and Lord Amulree represented Britain. Messrs Scullin, Brennan and Moloney, Australia, and Mr. Forbes and Sir T. Sidey, New Zealand. The. other Dominions were not attending. The decision will necessitate the speeding of the wonk, which was slowed earlier in the year. It is understood that aerial defence and the wireless station are also being completed, but the British Government is further considering land fortification. The discussions on Singapore have concluded as far as the conference is concerned. The decision meets the desires of Australia and New Zealand that a dock accommodating the largest ships shall be available.
