Two. burglars attempting to rob the Coonabarabran branch of the Bank of Xew Smith Wales early this morning were caught red-handed by the police after an exchange of shots. William Thomas, aged 22, a ledger-keeper, was the,only occupant of the bank building and was awakened by the burglars, who hit him on the head with a piece Ox iron, gagged and bound him. He, however, managed to get free and escaped unnoticed. He brought the police who -found the burglars in the act of wrecking the strongroom door and commanded them to surrender. '

Several shots were fired, the burglars using Thomas’ revolver. Finally they submitted to arrest.

The bank’s strongroom contained about £6OOO.
