CHRISTMAS NUMBERS
.: NEW ZEALAND ANNUALS. • The. Christmas Number-of the Auckland Weekly News, a copy of which has come to hand, follows familiar lines, ; being for the most part a pictorial presentation of the Dominion’s scenic beauties. Some very striking views are reproduced in admirable style, and mingled with them are many fine photographs descriptive of country life and sport. New Zealand’s bird life affords some interesting’ subjects; and the picturesqueness of the Maoris is not overlooked. The cover and the supplement are specimens of good colour printing, and tints are effectively employed in some of the halfpage and full-page illustrations. The whole production speaks well for the skill and efficiency of its designers and printers. The New Zealand Dairy Exporter Annual, which now incorporates Tui’s Annual, is unique among Christmas numbers, since it seems to be intended rather for. home consumption than for transamission to friends abroad. it -is) no doubt, a magazine for rural folk,: from many of whom it draws contributions—serious and humorous stories, .'verse, light sketches, funny stories, descriptive articles, nature notes and all the rest of it. A “practical farming” and a “special cookery’ section are, of course, .features of more than ephemeral interest, and the illustrations cover many charming and appealing subjects. A very large number of the 190 pages of this really remarkable book are filled with thoroughly' entertaining and readable matter, all enclosed within a stout cover carrying an effective poster design. The Exporter Annual is a very ereditable piece of work, indeed.
