CHEESE STANDARDISATION

SOUTH AUCKLAND SUPPORT MR. IORNS’ REPORT REGRETTED. WAIKATO COMPANIES’ OPINIONS, i - (By Wire —Special to News.) - Auckland, Last Night. The question whether standardisation was responsible for complaints that had been received regarding the quality of New Zealand cheese was discussed at a meeting of cheese factory lepiesentatives al Hamilton. The companies represented were the New Zealand Cooperative, the Cambridge, Tatua Norfolk, Waimana, Bruntwood and Kakepuke companies. . ; Mr. F. H. Anderson (Cambridge) said the industry had been surpi'ised at the hostile abtitudezadopted by Mr. W. A. .lorns, chairman of the Control Board, toward standardisation of cheese, and it viewed with apprehension the effect of Mr. lorns’ condemnation of the sale of the product in London. Mr. C. J. Parlane, general manager of tlie New Zealand Dairy Company, Ltd., supported Mr. Anderson. He agreed that there was room for improvement in the manufacturing methods and he considered much undesirable publicity had beeii given to the industry. Standardised cheese earned a cruarantce of butter-fat content and diy matter which was in excess of that required by the British regulations. The company’s Loudon manager, Mr. J. B. Wright, had reported that standardisatibn°was not responsible for the present trouble and that he was not prepared to recommend reversion to the manufacture of full-cream cheese Mr. C. L. Luke, South Auckland representative of the Dairy Control Board, said he had felt that the only thing to do was to support Mr. lorns in his resolution to revert to the manufacture of full-cream cheese, but he had changed his opinion since coming to the meeting and would support the retention of the standardised method. The meeting passed a resolution stating that a degree pf improvement/in the quality of cheese (full cream and standardised) could be brought about by the tightening of the existing gradin or regulations. The meeting protested against any proposal to abolish the present regulations which permitted of standardisation.
