ECHO OF ACCIDENT

CHARGE OF, DANGEROUS DRIVING. DRIVER FINED £5 AT HAWERA. An echo of an accident on the Austin Road on January 20 was heard in the Hawera Magistrate’s Court yesterday. The driver of a motor-car which had crashed into a power pole, Leonard William Mora, was charged with driving a motor-car in a manner which, having regard to all the circumstances, was dangerous to the public. He was also charged with failing to produce his driver’s license.

The case .as ..outlined by. SergeantHenry was that a tyre on defendant’s car had blown out near , the Te Roti factory. He had continued at a; speed that was not safe with a flat tyre and his vehicle had zig-zagged over the road. Three miles .farther on he had passed a milk cart driven by Mr. Hurley. Just after that he crashed into an electric power pole, a passenger in the car being slightly injured. At Eltham he was asked" for his driver’s license, whi'di he said he would take toJrthe Hawera police station as' he had not it with him. /The license had not b§en produced and the police had mot been able to get in touch with defendant until a fortnight ago. Timothy Hurley gave evidence that defendant had- overtaken him, steering a very erratic course. Witness estimated his speed at about 30 miles an hour. Just after the car passed witness’ milk wagon it swerved and crashed into an electric light pole. Constable Shirley produced a statement by defendant setting out that about 100 yards from the scene of the blow-out the passenger in his car had seized the wheel and this interference had caused him to collide with the pole. Sergeant Henry stated that from the Te Roti factory, where defendant \said the blow-out had occurred, to the scene of the accident was three, miles.

Mora, who wrote pleading guilty, was fined £5 on the first charge and convicted and discharged on the second. He was ordered to pay costs amounting to £1 12s 9d. '

FUNERAL OF LATE MR. A. T. MAIN.

LARGE GATHERING AT HAWERA.

The funeral of the late Mr. Alexander Thomas Main place at the Hawera cemetery' yesterday afternoon. A large and representative assemblage of residents of Mokoia, Hawera and surrounding districts gathered, at the graveside of a well-known and highly respected fellow citizen. About 50 cars constistuted the cortege, which proceeded from St". John’s Presbyterian Church to the cemetery. Services in the church and at the graveside were conducted by the Rev. R. E. Evans.. A large number of Freemasons, '■ of which order the late Mr. Main was a member, attended the funeral, the Mason’s service being conducted by Messrs. G. H. Buckeridge and F. W. Sutton. The pall-bearers were Messrs. W. J. Marsh, D. S. Richardson, A. Agostinelli, L. F. Bell, F, R. Williams and H. Scott. Many very beautiful > floral tributes were received.
