THE PORJ OF LONDON.

Presiding at the annual meeting ol the London General Shipowners’ Society, Mr. L. C. Harris dwelt at some length on the recent development of the Port of London and its trade. It was progressing jn all directions, he. said, and dedared London to be the most efficient in thp world. No other- port had gone in for such an up-to-date improve, ment programme. Port facilities had, during the last few years, been increased enormously, while the port dues nad been very substantially reduced during the last five years, two separate reductions having been made in the past 12 months. The value of cargo dealt with in the port had increased to a greater degree, than the value dealt with in the whoje of tire United Kingdom. Mr. Harris recalled that the London (Shipowners’ Society was the oldest body of shipowners in existence, and that from it had sprung practically all the large shipowners’ societies of to-day. Lloyd’s Register of shipping owed its existence to the shipowners, while the Shipping Federation and .the Chamber of Shipping were also off-shoota.
