SPECIAL EFFORT AT STRATFORD. INDUSTRIES WEEK APPROVED. Following upon, instructive addresses by Messrs. S- J. Goodey,. representative of the New Zealand Manufacturers’ Association, and H. Hessell, chairman of the Wanganui Retailers’ Association dealing with aspects of the recent successful Empire and New Zealand Industries Week held in that city, a representative gathering of Stratford business men decided last night to hold a similar week in conjunction with the 21st anniversary of the Stratford A. and P. show.

' The Mayor, Mr. P. Thomson, who convened the meeting, explained that the A. and P. Association wished the town to institute some special event to celebrate the coming of age of the association and had suggested an Empire or New Zealand Industries Week. This explanation was enlarged upon by Mr. J. C? Pvobins, speaking on behalf of the A. and P. Association, after which the visitors, who had made a special trip from Wanganui, addressed the meeting. -Mr. Goodey said the general idea was to get practically every window in the town to make displays of Empire and New Zealand goods. A levy of 5s per window was suggested, this money to go in prizes for a public competition to select the most attractive display. Rather elaborate voting papers could be sold at 3d each, while to facilitate voting .the various displays could be grouped according to tlw nature of their business. In Wanganui they had had: as many a« 145 windows and the experience over five successive years was that an increasing number desired to .come into the scheme. To encourage ingenuity and taste a- prize was given for the champion window. A, huge trade procession of three bands arid 140 vehicles together with special lighting effects had made a great success of their last week. , Mr. Hessell gave further details of the Wanganui week and dealt with the advertising and poster campaign necessary for the occasion. He assured the meeting that business had been greatly stimulated as a result of the effort.

A number of questions were then asked the visitors and after being assured that no other Taranaki town contemplated anything of a similar nature in the near future it was decided to go ahead with the week. A provisional general committee, consisting of Messrs, E. Carryer, W. Koski t, J. Walker, H. T. Cooper, J. Orr, G. Lamplough, E. D. Evans and J. Petrie junr. was then appointed with Mr. Hoskin to act as convener.

In tendering a hearty vote of thanks to the visitors the mayor stated the borough council would lend its fullest assistance to the project.
