MAINTENANCE OF A CHILD
FATHER’S FRANK ADMISSION. A maintenance case presenting some unusual features came before the Wanganui Police Court on Monday morning when the father of an illegitimate child which had been adopted was by consent adjudged the father of the child. The adoption took place about four years ago, and during that time the mother of the child had died, and the adopting parents had become destitute. Mr. Cohen in mentioning the case said that the father had admitted to the (police that he was the father of the child. If he had not done so it would have been extremely difficult to prove that he was, seeing that the mother was dead. “That matter,” added Mr. Cohen, “may cost him between £6OO and £7OO, but I am going to do my best to save him.”
When the order was made by consent, Mr. Bain, acting for the State and the child welfare officer, stated that the child was now a ward of the State and the maintenance of a child to the State cost 21S per Week. He then asked that an order for 21s per week be made against the father. Mr. Cohen asked for an adjournment of one week in order that he might submit argument to the court. This was granted.
