ATHLETICS IN SCHOOLS

PATEA DISTRICT ASSOCIATION ANNUAL MEETING REVIEWS WORK The annual meeting of the Patea and District Amateur Athletic Association was held in the Borough Council Chambers on Saturday, Mr. F. S. Tarrant presiding. Sympathy with the relatives <of the late Captain was expressed. The annual report stated that the cricket competition had been carried on during the last two months of the school year, the district being divided into northern and southern sections. The Patea team had won the northern competition and the Waverley A team the southern. The latter team had been victorious in the final. The annual sports held on March 22 in perfect weather had been very successful. The Strouts Cup for the greatest number of had been won by the Patea School. The seven-a-side football and basketball tournaments had been held on August 6. The weather had been fairly good until the afternoon. The popularity of holding the tournaments on a Wednesday had been proved by the increase in gate receipts of £2 3s. The Duffy Shield for senior football competition had been won by Patea, which had defeated WhenuakUra by three to nil and Waverley by 22 to nil. The junior cup had been won by Hurleyville after a final game with Carlyle (Patea). The basketball had resulted in a draw between the Waverley B and Whenuakura teams, there being no score after a contest lasting fiftyfive minutes. • The association had struck its own medals during the year and had sufficient silver medals in hand for two years and bronze medals for part of this year. .The medals had been made in Auckland at a cost of 2,s - 6fl for bronze and 4s 6d for silver. It would be necessary to enlarge the Duffy Shield at an early date. Financially the association was holding its own, there being a ,credit balance on the year’s working of £6 16s Is and an actual balance over all outstanding debts of £2 Ils lOd. That seemed a. decline from last year, when the credit balance' was £2O 7s Id, but over £lO was outstanding and at the time the association had stock to the value of about £6. The matter of membership needed urgent consideration. There were 15 members for the year and of these seven were teachers. i The election of officers resulted:—Patron, Mr. W. Collins; president, Mr. P. Palniier; deputy-president, Mr. R. Rutherford; nine vice-presidents; honorary secretary and. treasurer, Mr. Wither; committee, the officers, a teacher, from each school affiliated, and a representative of the Patea and Waverley Convents; honorary auditor, Mr. W. F. Shield.

A sub-committee was appointed to deal with the suggested revisions in the rules of constitution and to submit a report at a further meeting. .
