COMMISSION SUBMITS ITS REPORT
'■■DRASTIC CHANGES IN THE METHODS
BOARD OF CONTROL RECOMMENDED'

The report of the Railway Commission which inquired into the possibilities of increasing the revenue and decreasing the expenditure of the New Zealand railways was presented in the House of ; Representatives this afternoon. The Commission, the members of which were Messrs. R. Masters (chairman), J. D. Hall, R. W. Mc- \ Villy and J. Marchhanks, submitted a lengthy document, containing recommendations involving important alterations in the present system, including the depoliticalisation of control.
The Commission estimates that the approximate additional revenue which would be obtained if effect were given to the recommendations would be £334,000, and the' economies effected; would amount to approximately £194,000, thereby assisting the finances of the department to the extent of about £628,000 per annum. It adds that a further and substantial saving would also be made in the event of the staff being reduced to the minimum required to meet the business needs of the department.
