OBSERVATION OF ECLIPSE
NEW ZEALAND PARTY ARRIVES, OPENING OF RA’DIO STATION. By Telegraph—Press Assn.—Copyright. Rec. 7.35 p.m. Niuafoou, Oct. 1. The members of the New Zealand eclipse expedition landed from H.M.S. Laburnum at Niuafoou Island at 8 a.ni. on Monday. They .were welcomed by Dr. S. A. Mitchell on behalf -of the American party,, which'has. been' on tho island for, several weeks preparing for the observations. The Americans are under the control of Commander Koppler, who extended every facility to New Zealand’s representatives. (The New Zealand party started work almost immediately after landing. Dr. Adams chose the site for the erection of the New Zealand instruments and it is hoped a start will be made on Wednesday with the concrete work for the foundations. —-
The- Tongan Government’s new wireR elation at Niuafoou was opened on Monday. The opening ceremony was carried oiit in true native style. The dress of the natives was most picturesque, embracing all colours of the rainbow. Tlie ginging wae harmonious and the dancing was a beautiful sight. All the New Zealand party are well. This is the first message sent by the Tongan Government radio.
