DOMINION POSSIBILITIES ' EXPERIENCE IN AMERICA. ■' ■ ■■ ''■ ' ■ '.si:''. ;' ’V“I feci that in, many (respects New Zealand is; about, to. turn.; the corner aeronautically,” said Mr. E., P. Howard, Trade Commissioner in the Department of Commerce in the United States, 'in an address on “Commercial / Aviation” ait an. Auckland Chamber, of Commerce luncheon. “A country as beautiful and as . rugged as this should be' peculiarly adapted to air transport,” lie safd. ' ■ e . - / '■ Mr. Howard said that not Jong gao, only prior to May 20, 19'27,'when-Lind-bergh ihade his flight from.. New York to Paris, the average man in the United States had very little thought for aviation, although, of course, , there .were';-, some who were already air-minded. He ‘ felt‘that perhaps the average man. in New Zealand needed just that spark for the corner, to be turned. With Limb bergh’s flight came'air-consciousness and rapid development, and it seemed that New., Zealand was ready for similar expansion. ' - ■ “With this big development it .was only natural that; many, f mistakes. Were made,” Mr. Howard said. ‘‘However/we have' profited by them and we now have . a great mass of information. I am sure we will be glad to do anything we can to help the development of aviation in New Zealand. You have the talent here for air the technical knowledge necesc sary, and it seems that you only want to get the man in the street air-minded for support. I have seen the airbase at Ho'bsonville, and Major Isitt and those) associated ■ with him are. to be highly complimented upon such an ideal place.” ' In moving a vote of thanks to the speaker, Mr. 8. L. Crookes said that in» view of the development in the United . Stales it /eemed a pity that New Zealand should be lagging behind. He hoped that an air-sense would be developed as the result of Mr. Howard’s visit.
