MEETING OF TARANAKI CHAMBER GENERAL BUSINESS REVIEWED. The council of the Taranaki Chamber of Commerce met in New Plymouth last evening. Present: Messrs. L. M. Moss (chairman), F. E, Beamish, S. F. Burgess, J. M. O’Reilly, J. W. Darby, W. D. Armit, E. Shaw, R. J. R-' McGregor, A. F. Sandford,. Gordon. Fraser, J. McNeill and P. E. Stainton. The sotting up of a purposes committee, as suggested by Mr. J. McLeod, was referred to by the chairman. It would be very useful to have such a committee, said Mr. Moss, particularly for assisting with the local. administration of the Unemployment Act. The administration of that Act would have to be closely watched, and perhaps the chamber could make .nominations for members of the bqard in New Plymouth. .1 . . • . ? / The committee would be able to carry on the work of the chamber, said Mr. Shaw, when it was not necessary to call the whole council together.. A committee was set up consisting of the president, vice-president and Mr. McLeod. The matter of 1 the reductions of insurance payments by companies after loss by fire, raised by Mr. <McLeod at the annual meeting, was considered. Mr. Shaw pointed out that the English companies were all adopting a conservative policy in insurance. The same policy was being adopted in New Zealand. 'The value of house property and buildings had been inflated, and the trend was now all for deflation. A committee consisting of Messrs. McLeod and Shaw was act up to wait on the New Plymouth underwriters and discuss the position with them. The chamber decided to support a resolution of the Papakura chamber that the bodies interested should have adequate representation on the Highways Board. The district council of the National Defence League wrote asking the chamber to support a resolution favouring the re-establishment of military training at ’ the earliest possible moment. The chamber decided that, as the matter came outside its scope, it could only receive the letter.

The extension of the time for. the clearing of letter-boxes in the business area of the town'varying from 10 p.m. to 11.40 p.m., was notified by the chief postmaster. The chamber passed a vote of thanks to Mr. Beamish for his consideration. ' ■<.'
