HAWERA SCOTTISH SOCIETY

SEASON’S FINAL GATHERING. ENJOYABLE EVENING SPENT. Keen enthusiasm was displayed at the final social evening of the season conducted by the Hawera Scottish Society in St. Mary’s Hall on Wednesday evening. As is usual, the hall was filled with members and visitors from all parts of Taranaki and many other parts of New Zealand. Included amongst those present were Dr. D. E. Brown, chief of the New Plymouth Scottish Society, and president of the Taranaki Provincial Caledonian Sports Association; Mr. F. Purvis, chief of the Waimarino Scottish Society, and Mr. T. Smith, chief of the Stratford Scottish Society. Mr. J. E. Campbell, chief, who presided, extended a welcome to the visitors. Henson, Miss MeCofmick (Stratford), Misss Massey (Stratford), Mr. J. Crawford (Patea); ukulele and vocal duets by Messrs. S. Anderson- and A. Spragg; elocutionary items by Mrs. Twaddle and Miss N. Wards explained that there was a strong desire on the part of members that Mr,' J. E. Campbell should be selected chief, and as the rules stipulated that anyone could hold office for only two years a general vote was necessary. A petition was drawn up and signed by a large number, of members. Mr. Campbell said that ’though he appreciated the request he favoured a yearly change. He did, however, realise that it was the highest honour the society could confer on a member. Dr. Brown congratulated the society on the success of the social evenings, which were the means of bringing together so nfany Scots from all parts of the' province. i. Excellent supper arrangements were in charge of Mrs. A. Smith, while Miss Ballantyne and helpers were responsible for the decorations. Mrs. Young arranged the programme. Dancing to music supplied by Mr. T. Pickering’s orchestra concluded the function. Messrs. W. Marr and J. Nairn were masters of ceremonies.

The Hawera Pipe Band rendered selections under Drum-Major J. R. Nairn outside the hall before the function.
