FARMERS’ UNION BUSINESS

ADDRESS BY MR. H. R. DENIZE.

THE AGRICULTURE DEPARTMENT.

The South Taranaki provincial executive of tjie Farmers’ Union met at Hawera yesterday, Mr. E. J. Betts presiding There were also present Messrs. H.° Hodge, M. F. Voullairc,. L. A. Jennings, W. T. Seed, M. F. Barker, F. Silver, E. J. Booth, A. T. Sulzberger, P. J. Allan, F. Young, H. Thrush and J. Cocker, and the secretary (Mr. E. K. Cameron). . A letter was Received from Tnos. Cook and Son describing the arrangements of the New Zealand farmers’ tour for 1931. It was stated that the 1930 party was having a most enjoyable and instructive time. . , Mr. H. R. Denize, who was introduced by the chairman, expressed pleasure at the opportunity of meeting the members of the executive. It was only by cooperation with such practical farmers that the work of the Agricultural Department’s officers could be as effective and successful as was desired. Being almost a newcomer to the district, Mr. Denize said, he was loath to express any opinion on matters largely affected by local conditions silch as rainfall and .climate until he had, a? it were, found his feet. In view of that he would keep to subjects he was -well acquainted with. He proceeded to give some idea of the work of the Agricultural Department over the last few months. The killing of. ragwort, the feeding of store pigs and calves, and the necessity of mineral matter in stock food were discussed. ? x ' In reply to a question, Mr. Denize said that the sodium chlorate used in the eradication of ragwort was indeed very inflammable, and care had to be exercised. Clothing which became soaked with the spray caught fire very' easily. The danger of fire was stressed at every demonstration. To another member Mr. Denize stated that the use of' the crystals was quite effective. The member who inquired said the ragwort plants on his farm were very scattered. The use of crystals or a small watering can. of strong solution would be sufficient in that case. Officially the department did not encourage the' use of crystals, for such 1 a practice was costly and wasteful. .Where there were but few small plants the application of crystals would save the cost of a spraying machine* The chairman moved a vote of thanks to Mr. Denize for his attendance and instructive and' interesting address, the motion being carried with acclamation. WOMEN’S DIVISION OFFICERS. restriction to country women The- South Taranaki executive of the Women’s Division of the Farmers’ Union met at Hawera yesterday, Mrs. Carter presiding. A letter was received from Mrs. Oliver, president of the Timaru branch, referring to the question of office in the organisation. It was suggested that only country women should hold executive positions, and in this the meeting concurred. . , The question of forming a local executive to carry on the business of the organisation was raised, but it was decided that the time was inopportune for any change. .■ It was decided to institute a lecturette ’at every second meeting, and the matter was left to the arrangement committee. j \ An electrical cooking demonstration is to be held some Thursday, the date to be arranged later.. Mrs. Cocker read a resume of the executive’s meeting held recently in Wellington. ,

GENERAL ITEMS. Further entries for the bojo and girls’ clubs’ competition have been received as follows: Huiiba, two entries carrots; Kapenga, one grade calf; Wangahume, three grade calves and three entries carrots. At a well-attended meeting of parents of Tawhiti school pupils this week preliminary arrangements for the annual fancy-dress ball were made. The success of last year’s function has induced the committee to take the Winter Show building this year. An energetic ladies’ committee, headed by Mrs. J. B. Laurenson, is arranging the catering. o OPERA HOUSE TO-NIGHT. “SUCH MEN ARE DANGEROUS.” Adapted from Elinor Glyn’s sensational, romantic story, with Warner Baxter and Catherine Dale Owen in the leading roles, “Such Men are Dangerous,” Fox Movietone production, will be the feature attraction at the Opera House Talkies, Hawera, for two nights and one matinee, commencing to-night. “Such Men are Dangerous” is heralded as one the best pictures made since the screen began to talk, and embraces all the required elements of solid entertainment, suspense, thrills, drama and comedy with more intriguing twists than Miss Glyn has heretofore offered. Not since his-splendid performance in “In Old Arizona,” in which he portrayed the character of “The ’Cisco Kid,” has Baxter been more delightfully cast. Catherine Dale Owen, acclaimed the most beautiful blonde of the films, recently supported John Gilbert in “His Glorious Night.” The cast includes such notables as Hedda Hopper, Albert Conti, Claude Allister and Bela Lugosi. It was directed by Kenneth Hawks. There is a strong supporting programme, including a further series of Mickey the Mouse, this time in “The Karnival Kid.” Box plans are at Miss Blake’s shop.
