GOLFERS ~ GRAND ' SLAAf- . i BOBBY JONES’ FOUR WINS .. . ' «— — 4 THE AMERICAN AMATEUR. A SPECTACULAR VICTORY — . ■«( 1 By Telegraph—Press Assn.—Copyright. Rec. 5.5 p.m. Nety York, Sept. 27. Vt Ardmprd, Bobby Jones defeated Eugene Homans, of Englewood (New Jersey), 8 up and 7 to play, thus winning the United States amateur golf championship ■ and completing the unparalleled “grand slam” of four major titles. He has won the British open and amateur championships and the American open and amateur championships in the present year. ' Jones won the amateur title in a match that was far more a spectacle than it was a contest, namely, a parade to victory. Jones, however, was not flawless. He. was in sufficient trouble during the round to disprove the gener-i ally accepted theory that he is a machine and not a human being. Starting by winning the first hole, Jones by taking advantage of his opponent’s willingness gradually built up a lead, which became three holes at the fourth, eight at the I6th, seven at the 18th,- nine at the 22nd and eight at the finish. Jones covered 18 holes in 72, Homans requiring 80, and the final nine in 38 to Homan’s 39. Par for the course ( is 70. . . J . .
