MATAU-KIORE ROADING

£3OOO LOAN FOR METALLING. SETTLERS APPROVE PROPOSAL. “That a- loan of £3OOO be raised to metal roads in the Matau area, the portion of the Matau Road from the junction of the Mangaoa,pa Road to Matau to have first call on the loan, the balance of the money to be allocated to the various roads in proportion to the amounts'Of rates collected on each road, the Mangaoapa. special loan area to be excluded from the proposal.” The passing of that motion at a meeting of ratepayers of; the Ngatimaru riding of the Stratford county at Matau yesterday means that, providing the Loans Board approves the proposal; in the near future there will be metalled roads from. Kiore to Matau arid from Kiore along the Mangaoapa Road , to its intersection with the Junction Road near Purangi. . , The question of the Ngatimaru riding loan for metalling purposes has bden i 'knotty problem which has presented some difficulty in solution. Some years ago the Government promised a £3 for £1 subsidy to metal the road from Kiore, where there is a station on the Stratford railway, to Matau, a distance of 5} miles. In the first place it was proposed to raise three 1 loans, but the Loans Board refused to sanction the proposal because the loans overlapped.. Then it was proposed to raisd a',£4o®, loan over the whole riding, but that proposal fell through on afccount of 1 some of the settlers misunderstanding t' s position and finally refusing to lend their support to the petition. Finallv the Mangaoapa settlers forwarded to the Stratford County Council a counter-petition to metal from - Kiore to the junction of the Mangaoapa and Junction Roads about a mile from Purangi. . . ' .* ■' ' Faced with’ a complication of which the councillors had only a superficial am quaintance, the council decided last Sat-; urday to defer its decision oii t’lje matteruntil the next meeting.?Meanvyhile the .chairman, .Mr. T. KING’S THEATRE PROGRAMME. “CLANCY. IN. WALL STREET.” . Director Ted Wilde,’ formerly with Harold Lloyd, found that the fluctuations of the stock market were involved in the making of Hcianey in Wall Street” ii) more way's than one. The. story, which provides a vehicle for Charles Murray, ■■ popular Irish funmaker, is based on the Wall Street crash of last October. Wilde knew that, of course, when he started the production. What /he did not know was that almost every member of hits cast had been involved in that crash, too, and, at the time, the picture was being made, they were trying through further speculation to recoup their losses. The result was fhat many scenes were delayed while one member of the eaut or another was busy at a telephone. Who the speculators a."e is not reported. The cast, however, included, in addition to Murray, Lucien Littlefield, Miriam Seegar, Edward Nurrent, Angie Herring and Reed Howes. “Clanev C Tn Wall Street” will open at the Krug's Theatre this afternoon.
