OLD NAVY MAN’S FUNERAL

FULL HONOURS ACCORDED. By-Telegraph.—Press Association. Wellington, Last Night. With full naval honours the remains of the late Mr. Harry McNeish, who was a member of two Antarctic expeditions, Scott’s anJ Shackleton’s, and also served 25 years in the Royal Navy, were laid to rest iii Karori Cemtery to-day. Draped with a Union Jack, the coffin was borne on df gup carriage, with riders provided by the New Zealand Royal Artillery, with four naval pall bearers on each side, and the cortege was preceded by a naval mourning detachment in command of Lieutenant Lovegrove. There was a naval firing party from ILM.S. Dunedin. The service was conducted by the Rev. W. Shirer.

Among those present were Major Watson (secretary of the Returned Soldiers’ Association), Mr. R. Darrock (secretary of the Navy League for New Zealand), Mr. W. B. Hicks (superintendent of the Ohiro Home, representing the Wellington Hospital Board), an inmate of the home, three representatives of the Wellington Shipwrights’ Union, who worked with Mr. McNeish at the Thames Ironworks, London, some years ago, Mr. H. Pepper, who was a midshipman on the relief ship Morning when she went to the relief of the Discovery in 1902-4, Mr. C. Glidden, an able seaman on the Aurora, one of Sir Ernest Shackleton’s expedition ships which went to the Ross Sea.

At the conclusion of the service by the graveside three volleys were fired over the grave, and the “Last Post” was sounded. Floral tributes were received from the Commodore, officers and men of H.M.S. Dunedin, from Mr. McNeish’s workmates at the New Zealand Shipping Company, from the inmates and staff of the Ohiro Home, and from the Navy League.
