THE TAX ON FILM RENTS INDUSTRY WILL NOT BE CRIPPLED. HON. E. A. RANSOM’S LAST WORD . By Telegraph.—Press Association. ■ Wellington, Last Night. In a statement replying to ; Sir Victor Wilson’s protest against the imposition of the film hire tax the ActingPrime Minister (the Hon. E. A. Railson) said the Government would not consider further representations in regard to taxation on an ad valorem basis with a view to possible legislation amendments next session. Mr. Ransom explains that the whole * basis of film renting in the Dominion works backward from the'box office. The hire tax is the most equitable way of making the levy. To do otherwise would be equivalent to bharg; mg duty by the yard on cloth irrespec- . t’ve of whether it is silk or cotton. “As the industry is carrying bn with comparative equanimity in other countries under taxation at least as if not heavier than has been in New Zealand,” said the Minister, “it is quite evident that the amount to be paid until such time as a review can be made will not crinnle tlie industry.’’
