FASHION NOTES

FROM A FRENCHWOMAN’S DIARY. THE LONG FROCK FASHION. (By Colline Rouff.—Special to News.) The chic Parisienne is smiling at the newspapers’ announcement: “Defeat of the long frock fashion! Women will not wear trailing gowns!” She knows 'quite well that we were, neither intended nor invited to wearMwailing gowns in .the daytime, for nothing could be more ridiculous. But just because a few mannequins went to the races in outre toilettes, and got their silly fripperies completely spoilt, people seem to think that pretty ankle-length dresses will’be seen no.more. As a matter of fact, the smartest day frocks are much longer now than tliay were at this time last year, and no up-to-date woman would dream of appearing in knee-length skirte. If you arc in doubt about fashions for the immediate future, I can only advise you to wait until the . designers show the models they have prepared. Meanwhile/let us talk about the delightful garments for- present - wear.-'; ■ ;■ *4 NAVY SHANTUNG. Navy blue is seen everywhere, in all kinds of materials. And it is welcomed by everyone, for it is elegant and refreshingly “new” after having been put - araide for . many" seasons. Dark-toned Shantung is beingused for suits destined to be worn in the sunny South. There are frocks with bloused bodices, fitted hip-lines, and well-stitched pleated skirts. They have sleeves half-way to the elbows and square-cut neck-lines, both finished with -softly frilled white muslin which, in turn, is edged with finely frilled white muslin which, in turn, is edged’ with .finely rolled rasp-berry-pink, scarlet or orange muslin, or else with very narrow lacc. There are also Shantung suits • with pleated skirts, ■ short jackets, and blouses of plain or spotted white muslin,, or of very fine white linen. These blouses are made on jumper Hubs, sleeveless, with V-shape necks. A narrow 'Tie may be pulled through two slots in front, and a monogram, .or some -amusing motif, is often embroidered ori the .right side to lend a touch of colour. ......z..-. . MAROCAIN ENSEMBLES. A useful ensemble comprises a froek of navy-blue silk marocain and a simple coat of .wool marocain in the /same colour. The di - ess~r-sleeveless, or with short sleeves—-has a flared skirt, and a belt of the material. The normal waist is nearly always marked by a belt, although the join of bodice and skirt may be at the hips or below them. The alliance of rose-pink and navyblue is even more, happy, than that of rose and black. A hat of navy panamalacquo will have roses tucked beneath the brim -over the- ear, across the forehead bandeaux, or across the nape of the neck. Rose and navy velvet ribbons twisted together form another] favourite trimming for navy or natural panama hats. The only time in which navy is not welcomed is tho evening. One or two ci re lace gowns in this colour have been shown, but they do not look attractive. A PEEP INTO THE ZODIAC. SEPTEMBER 24 -TO OCTOBER 23. The Zodiacal sign Libra and the planet Venus rule over this period, and influence the lives and destinies of. those born under them. Such people should possess good reasoning powers and sound judgment, the happy faculty of being able to see both sides of a question, keen foresight, and reliance on first impressions in dealing with other people. / ''There will be a good deal 'of pride and ambition. There will also be ability to lead and rule, but at times it,, may be dangerous to follow Libra subjects as they can bo reckless, impetuous and even inconstant. t Some impatience wjill bo shown occasionally, and a peculiar form of depression, though Libra people are ardent, enthusiastic,; and keen on hobbies of various kinds. They are sensitive folk, with a certain love of pleasure. They should guard against being too cutting and sharp in speech, and should beware of carelessness and running to extremes. Let them I cultivate', concentration' and learn to carry on until tho job oil hand is finished. Libra subjects do not resent being put right when they are in the wrofig. They should succeed in public work, or anythino- bringing them . into close touch with° people of all types. Large cities and places where there is plenty of activity are best for health and happiness, but harmony and a contented mind are the chief needs. Many love affairs will come into the lite of the person born under Libra, and there will be great changes through the affections. He will make a good partner and will endeavour to preserve harmony, which will not be difficult with one born between January 21 and February 18, May 22 and Juno 21, July 24 and August 23, or November 23 and Dec-, ember 22. The fortunate birth stones are the chrysolite and turquoise; colours, crimson and light blue; flowers, golden rod; day, Friday. HOME-MADE CRACKNELS.
