BUSY WEEK FOR Y.W.C.A.

The members of the New Plymouth Y.W.C.A. have been busy during the last few days. Miss Gillies’ departure for Dunedin has been the occasion of several special gatherings; Hostel residents arranged a banquet in her honour - at which j/very one of the 35 guests made a speech. Those who felt prose was beyond them riiado verses which created much mirth. Miss- Papps, on behalf of all the residents, presented Miss Gillies with a travelling clock. The gaily decorated tables and the beautiful balloon decorations completed the transformation of the hostel dining room, and there was a delightful games programme arranged by Miss Black to complete a memorable evening’s entertainment. .Members of the board of -directors gathered at the home of Mrs. Blackley to take, their farewell of Mies Gillies and to express their regret at losing her. Mrs. Blundell, in the absence 'of Mrs. Alexander, presented her with a handbag on behalf of all those present. Board members and hostel residents made a big group on the platform on Friday morning as they ’ wished Miss Gillies good fortune in her new sphere. Miss Law’s visit has also been the reason for particularly interesting meetings. IQirl Citizens and club members have met for discussion groups and. a dramatic entertainment. The “stunts” and playlets arranged by the groups, were most amusing. The Rangitiri section came first ii* the competition' for an original ten minutes’ drama, entitled “Disillusion.” A ,'littlo ceremony .took place when Miss Daw arranged ja short service, mostly of singing, concluding with the candle-lighting ceremony which symbolises the completest recognition of the meaning of the association purpose. h , , ■ An “at home” for members, and. their friends took place on Thursday afternoon, a fair number being present in spite of the rain. Interesting items were provided -by Mrs. Davie, the •Misses Cocker, Armstrong and. Gaustad, and; Miss Law gave a most illuminating talk oh the activities of the New Plymouth Association. Miss Law has also met.- leaders for discussion, the Mothers’ Club and a special’ group of women who meet monthly to study the conditions of girl life in the community. VICTORIA LEAGUE TEA. A delightful musical and floral tea. ■ was held in the Victoria League club room, New Plymouth, on Friday afternoon, when the Whakarato (girls’) branch members were the hostesses. The programme, which gave very much enjoyment, was given by Miss Brodie (songs), Misses Crawshaw and East (piano) and Miss McCarthy (recitations). Misses Nuttall and Clarke were the winners of the apron competition. Some very attractive work was made for this contest. TIKORANGI WOMEN’S INSTITUTE. There was an excellent attendance at tfiiL Tikorangi Women’s Institute meeting.- on Tuesday. The members welcomed visitors from Inglewood, Tarata and Waitara. An interesting raffia demonstration was given by Mrs. Browning, Waitara. At afternoon tea everyone was presented with-'a small piece of the Inglewood Institute’s first birthday cake. ; On closing the meeting Mrs. Morey, the president, thanked Mrs. Browning for coming to Tikorangi and giving the demonstration. The hostesses’ were Mesdames Garner and Jupp. PUKEARUHE HOCKEY DANCE.' A very enjoyable evening.was spent in the Pukearuhe hall on Monday, when the hockey girls held their annual dance. The girls decorated the hall in multi-coloured streamers, forming a cobweb effect,' with a background of greenery. Visitors came from surrounding districts as far as Stratford. The Monte Carlo was w - on by Miss E. Wells and Mr. H. Martin, the lucky spot by Miss B, - Glassford and Mr. Nia "Edwin, the waltzing competition by Mr. and Mrs. Chard, and the last Monte Carlo by Mrs. Edward White and Mr. B- Lambert.' Mr. Martin, New Plymouth, gang two songs. The M.C. was Mr. D.' Scott, assisted by Mr. H. Martin. The music was by the Moturoa string orchestra.' Extras were supplied by jSiss D. Martin, Miss O. Lambert and Mr. Nia Edwin.
