BOROUGH OFFICE CHANGE

ALTERATIONS UNDER WAY. MORE ROOM FOR THE PUBLIC. Alterations that will considerably increase the space available for the public office are under way in the Hawera Borough Council chambers. The borough offices are to be moved across the present passage to those until recently occupied- by the Egmont Racing Club. tip to the present the public office and the town clerk’s office have each been 16ft. by 14ft. in dimensions. The new quarters for the public will be 20ft, by 18ft. bin. while the town clerk’s room will be 12ft. by. 18ft. Gin. This will give a great deal more space for the stall and especially for the public. The Egmont Racing ■ Club, which will eventually occupy the old borough offices, has vacated its rooms’ and moved upstairs for the time being to allow the necessary alterations to bb made. These entail the ’ removal of; a chimney and the shifting of the passage wall, about 4ft. Gin. towards the other side. It is expected that the work will be completed within a fortnight. ' DEATH OF MR. A. J. HERBERT. PROMINENT KAPONGA RESIDENT The death occurred on Tuesday of Mr. Arthur J. Herbert, an old resident of Kaponga and a member of the Kaponga Town Board. He was an early settler- of the district and later was farming with a son at Whakamara but returned to Kaponga six years ago. Mr. Herbert took an active part in civic affairs., He was a keen bowler and caretaker of the bowling green. Mr. Herbert, who was in his sixty-fourth year, had been in indifferent health for some time past, and a few weeks ago entered the Wanganui hospital to undergo :two operations, which were not considered to be serious. He successfully negotiated the operations and appeared to be making a good recovery when a relapse occurred. Mr. Herbert leaves three sons, Messrs Arthur and Allen Herbert,- Whakamara, and Mr. Roy Herbert, Kaponga. His’only daughter, Mrs. Skevington, resides at Whakamara. The funeral took place at Hawera yesterday, there being a large and epreshntative gathering of settlers from Kaponga and Whakamara. The pall-bearers were Messrs J; Gulliver, H. R. Scott and.S. Buckrell, Whakamara, J. H. Tyack, Law, and A. V. Tait, Kaponga. The Rev. C. W. Solomon conducted the service both-at St. Mary’s Church and at the graveside. PERSONAL ITEMS. v The funeral of Mr. Robert Hunt took place yesterday, a cortege of about 2(1 cars following the casket to the Hawera cemetery. There were many beautiful wreaths from old provincial friends. The pall, bearers were the six sons Messrs. George, Lewis, Leonard, Oswald, Laurepce and Kenneth Hunt and Mr. J. Smith. The Rev, J. R. Young conducted the final obsequies. - • ■ To mark their appreciation of the services and assistance rendered in connection with the various social activities held at the Mafiaia town hall a few members of the ladies’ committees visited the Manaia, town hall on Tuesday afternoon and presented the departing town clerk, Mr. J. A. Ross, with a large box of cigarettes and a cigarette lighter. The son of Mrs. T. H. Fever, Wellington, formerly of Hunter Road, Eltham, has been seriously i.ll in the Wellington hospital with pneumonia. He is now progressing favourably. Voullaire, Kaponga, came into collision on Wednesday afternoon. No one was hurt and the cars’, both five-seaters, were not extensively, damaged. A . five-seater open touring ear, the property of Mr, F. T. Nicholson, Normanby, was removed from Milmoe Street, Hawera, on Wednesday night. A dance was in. progress and the ear had been parked nearby. The number of the motor, which has not yet been recovered, is 69-460. Eighty-five applications have been received for the position of town clerk at Manaia. Of these three have been selected for an interview. The annual meeting of the, Hawera Defence Rifle Club will be held in the Golden Minim, Hawera, on October 7 at 8 p.m. ' Two demonstrations of the sodium chlorate remedy for ragwort and other noxious weeds will be given by the South Taranaki Agricultural Department officers to-day, one being on M. Schultz’s farm at Harleyville and the other on the. farm of Mr. A. S. Elmes, Ohangai. These will bring the number of demonstrations in the south to five, others having been given already at Auroa, Awatuna and Matapu.

Nominations for three vacancies on file Hawera Technical High School Board closed last night. The three retiring members, Messrs J. B. Murdoch (representing local . bodies), J. W. Harming (school committees) and H. Bown.an (employers), were the only nominees so there will be no election.
