GIRL GUIDE ASSOCIATION
ACTIVITIES IN NEW PLYMOUTH. ■ I REVIEW AT ANNUAL MEETING. The fifth annual meeting of the New Plymouth Girl Guides’ Association was held last night. Aire. H. W. Broad, district commissioner, presided. The report recorded a successful year. Although there was a decrease m numbers the guides were just as. keen. The decrease was partly due to there joeing no ranger company to which to transfer the older girls, but it was hoped to inaugurate one very shortly. Following were details of the movement in New Plymouth, the figures for last year being shown in parentheses: Guides 70 (92). Brownies 61 (56), officers TO (13), total 143 (161). The resignation of Mrs. F. 8. Hodson at the beginning of the year had been a great loss to the movement, of which she was the prime mover in Taranaki. She was divisional commissioner for over four years, but was unable to carry on owing to ill-health. Aliss T. Duckworth, tawny owl for the Te Mara pack, had gained her warrant during the year. The following badges were gained: Guides-—First class, 1; second class, 9; thrifts, 5; cobblers, 2; ambulance, 5; child nurse, 27; artists, 2; toy-makers, 9; basket-mak-ers, 8; needlework, 2; swimming, 4. Brownies—First class, 13; second class, 10; athletic, 1; observer; 1; swimming, 7; collectors, 7; needlework, 2; house orderly, 10; Brownie Guide, 1; artist, 3; weavers, 5; Brownie Wings, 4. Teams from each company entered for the Herbert Smith Trust Cup for athletics in North Taranaki. The cup was won by Stratford. The New Plymouth team won the pre-Jellicoe shield against Hawera. The results of the Jellicoe shield ambdjance competition were not yet to hand. The Brewster shield for life-saving was won by the High School company. The report reviewed the combined company party, the. first provincial rally at Ne*v Plymouth and other guidino- activities during the year. The Afisses M. Gaustad and B. Henderson had been enrolled as officers. The balance-sheet disclosed a credit of £6 14s 7d. The report and balance-sheet were adopted. The following officers were elected:— President, Airs. Rex Brewster; ten vicepresidents; committee. Alesdames Chivers, L. C. Sladden, J. Deare, J. H. Mackay, N. B. Bellringer, A. B. Macdonald, E. J'jveriss, Misses Campbell, Dowling and D. Simpson (secretary and treasurer). Mrs. D. K- Morrison, provincial commissioner, tnanked the officers for their support and expressed the opinion that with continued enthusiasm the movement would make greater progress than ever this year. .
