STEADY DEMAND FOR BEEF. STORE PIGS REMAIN FIRM. Auckland, Last Night. The Westfield sale of stock was held to-day. Beef was penned in average numbers and there was a steady demand, with values on a par with late quotations. Extra choice ox sold to £1 19s per 1091 b, choice and prime £1 16s to £1 ISs, ordinary and plain £1 13s to ~1 15s, prime young and heifer beef £1 14s to £1 17s, ordinary cow beef £1 10s to £1 13s. Beef and store sheep sold at slightly improved rates but fat sheep eased rather markedly. Though the store sheep entry contained little of more than very ordinary merit there was a free sale with a shade of improvement. Good two-tooth crossbred ewes made to 24s 6d, medium twotooth halfbred ewes (empty) to 16s sd, aged halfbred ewes (empty) to 5s 2d, good halfbred ewes and lambs (all counted) to 13s 4d, ordinary halfbred ewes and lambs (all counted) 10s to Ils 3d. extra good two-tooth halfbred, wethers to 23s 3d, good four-tooth halfbred wethers to 20s, medium six and eight-tooth halfbred wethers 15s Cd to 16s lOd, good wether hoggets to 15s. medium wether hoggets 12s to 13s 4d, ordinary wether hoggets 7s 6d to 8s sd, medium ewe hoggets to 14s sd. A small entry of spring lambs averaged from Is 3d to Is 4d a lb. Heavy fat wethers were back on last week by 3s to 3s Cd and medium weight and the heavier ewes by 2s 6d. There was a small entry of dairy cows and a good demand for early calvers was evident. Backward springers were in poor demand. . Porkers were in medium supply. The sale was a keen one and prices were maintained. Baeoners sold better. There was a fair yarding in the store pig pens. Prices for weaners were a lilttie earner but large stores showed no change. London, Sept. 23. At the wool sales 11.779 bales -were offered, including 4988 from New Zealand. Approximately 9570 were sold. There was an excellent offering of all New Zealand descriptions. Slightly better top prices were maintained. New Zealand best greasy halfbreds made 13d and halfbred slips lamps 12d. Greasy crossbred: Mangaohane, top 9Ad, average 9d. IMPERIAL SMELTING PROFITS. London, Sept. 23. Imperial Smelting, Ltd.’s, profit is £231,372, of which £35,300 has been brought forward.
