LITTLE GUIDE IN AVONDALE FORM

FIRST SIGHT SHOWS UP AT SYDNEY

Avondale in mud and slush last week-end did not give the good class horses an opportunity to show to Advantage, and so little light was shed on the prospects ' for the New Zealand Cup in November. Prodice won rather comfortably at Avondale, First Sight registered a smart performance over a sprint distance at Kosehnl, and Starshooter had no difficulty m taking the tenfurlong event at Ashburton, but, though there is mer in each of these performances, the trio are scarcely calculated to cause a fluctuation m the early market. However, the A.J.C., Auckland and Dunedin Spring fixtures should provide a full-dress rehearsal for the most fancied aspirants. Each week-end strengthens the contention that Nightmarch will return to New Zealand after the AJ".C. carnival, owing to the complete superiority of Phar Lap, and the general outciy raised against the visitors in Sydney will doubtless induce many others to “break camp” and trek homewards. Concentrate however, does not appear at this stage to be among likely to return. It is significant that his connections liave expressed satisfaction with the Melbourne weights and their attitude is confirmed largely by the fact that the Kilbroney gelding is undergoing a solid preparation for long-distance iacand it does not look as if he is being seriously considered for the A.J.C. engagements. Back in New Zealand, Ellerslie and Wingatui should give some guide for the North Island and South Island candidates respectively In the Mitchelson Cup an excellent opportunity for a try-out is presented to Prodice, Star Stranger, Seatown, Pan-ther, Count Palatine, Mendip, Desert Glow » ageous, Nassock and The Sun, while it is more thaii likelythat, the Dunedin meeting will find Count Cavoui, Jaloux Beau Geste, Lord Thomond, Lucky Light, Latin Quarter and others in action. When the first payment is made on October 24, the bettors will have all the possible spring form at their fingertips, and the position should be elucidated considerably.
