RACE TO AVOID NEW DUTY

RECORD BUTTER SHIPMEN 1 NIAGARA SAILS LATE FOR CANADA. EXPORTERS TAKING NO CHANCES. (By Wire—Special to News.) Auckland, Last Night. Tlie possibility of a race against time to unload a large shipment .of New Zealand butter on the Canadian market before the operation of tile increased duty gives special interest to the present trip of tlie Niagara, which sailed from Auckland to-night for Vancouver. Tlie Niagara, which is carrying approximately 50,000 ■ boxes of butter, i<3 due at Vancouver on October 10, two days before tlie operation of the higher duty on New Zealand butter. Owimr to wet weather on Monday loading operation* at Auckland were delayed and the Niagara, which was scheduled to sail at 3 o’clock to-day, did not leave until 10.30 p.m. . Under ordinary conditions, however, this time will be picked up during the voyage. Th ■ Niagara is expected to reach Vancouver on the morning of October 10 and tlie Canadian Customs Office, it is understood, has insisted that all documents connected with the consignment must be handed in before noon on October U. . ... 3 Although no trouble is anticipated, should a satisfactory trip be made, nothing has been left to chance. Arrangements have been made with the Union Steam Ship Company that in case of a delay the whole of the consignment will be unloaded at Victoria, the port on Vancouver Island just south of Vancouver, and the. documents will be conveyed by air mail to Vancouver. T .3 arrangement will not involve any additional expense and considerable time will be saved if it becomes a matter of hours. As the Niagara’s shipment will be tlie last to arrive in Canada before the application of the new tariff, exporters increased their shipments and the consignment is a record one to Canada for the present time of the year.
