HAWERA CLUB REVIEWS YEAR. FINANCIAL POSITION BETTER. Financially the Hawera Amateur - Athletic Club is in a' better position tha,n at the end of the previous season, due largely to the number of honorary members tickets sold and to the profit from the annual ball, according to the committee’s report to the annual meeting last night. There was a good attendance, over which Air. L. H. Clapham* presided. “The following particulars of gate receipts,” the report continued, “since the club’s inception give an indication of the popularity of the sport: 1921, £43; 1922, £2B; 1923, £54; 1924, £25; 1925, £24; 1926, £O5; 1927, £B6;' 1928, £7; 1929, £3l; 1930, £73. i - “At the end of 1928-29 season, the committee guaranteed £3O to the New Zealand Amateur Athletic Association to secure Canadian athletes to' compete at Hawera. Owing io unforeseen circumstances the Canadian athletes were unable to make the trip. Similar applicatiqn was made for a visit to Hawera of the Australian athlete Golding and the American Lermond, but the committee was unable to secure a date for these athletes to visit Hawera.

“During the season there were ten evening meetings, one electric light carnival, the Wanganui-Taranaki championships and four cycle road races, a total of. 10, which is considered a notable performance, if not a record, for any club in the Dominion. The outstanding event of the season so far as the club was concerned was the Wanganui-Taranaki championships. Hawera again won the championship banner. To A. Hart, A. Pollock, S. A. Lay, EJ K. Cambie, L. Hunt, D. Wills, L. A. Newall and H. J. C. Kelsen and Misses V. Allen and E. Toy, the committee extends congratulations on their selection tq represent the centre at the New Zealand championships. All did remarkably well, Lay winning the javelin championship and D. Wills the three-mile walk championship. L. A. Newall was second in the 120 yards hurdles championship and L. Hunt second and third in throwing the discus and hammer championships respectively. “Mr. A. Coleman, Eltham, donated a challenge cup for competition in walking events. The cup will be known as the Coleman Cup. “Stan. Lay was selected to represent New Zealand at the British Empire Games at Hamilton, Canada. He won the British Empire championship javelin throw.

Stevens, T. Linxhorn and S. Lay. An alteration ia the itinerary of the proposed tour of the American athletes Simpson and Bullwinkle wag received from the centre. The athletes meet at Wanganui on February 11, New Plymouth February 13 and Hawera February 18. The secretary was voted an honorarium of £5 ss. The offer of Air. S- Reece to do signwriting for the chib free of charge was accepted with thanks.
