WAITOITOI-URENUI NEWS

URENUI SCHOOL COMMITTEE. ' iThc following report was submitted by the headmaster, Mr. L. Bicheno) at the monthly meeting of the Urenui school committee: ‘’The school roll is now 75, an increase of three for the month. The average attendance, however, has not been good. Continued sickness and rough weather 1 have combined to bring it down to 65. Those with children between Urenui and the end of the metalled portion of the Mataro Road must appreciate the granting of a service bus for the conveyance of their children to and from school. The work of the school has been somewhat heavy during most of the month. Miss Elliott has been away on four weeks’ sick leave. Miss Giddy has been relieving for the greater portion of this period. Many of the children have been away with influenza, which has subsequently developed into pleurisy in some, cases, so that their perod of enforced absence has been lengthened. As the weather Jias now become less wintry there has not been the same demand for hot cocoa at lunch, and as the supply of cocoa needs general support to make it pay it has been discontinued temporarily, ‘but will be resumed if the mild weather is not maintained. During the month we have been engaged clearing and levelling the grounds at the western side of the school. Levelling, and planting climbing plants around the unsightly stumps will improve appearances materially.” Correspondence was received from the Education Board in connection with the subsidy granted on the dictionary. It was decided that in view of the present state of the school funds the board be asked to extend the. time before the payment of the subsidy. , MIMI EUCHRE TOURNAMENT.
