WOMAN SERIOUSLY HURT
ACCIDENT ON HUTT ROAD LORRY CRASHES. INTO PILLAR DANGER AT OVERHEAD BRIDGE PAY©. VEHIODE BADLY S'MAfeHED. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Wellington, Last Night. iSmashing into the central pillar of an overhead bridge across the Hutt ■Road near Kaiwarra on Saturday night a Public Works Department lorry boundfor Wellington was wrecked. A w.oman passenger was injured rather seriously "and now lies at the Wellington hospital. The driver, V. Hughes, was cut about the head and face. The passenger, Miss Georgina O’Connor, who lives in Bolton Street, was taken by ambulance to' hospital suffering from cuts on the face, a broken nose and concussion. A piece of concrete was knocked out of the pillar with the force of the impact. The bonnet of the vehicle was pushed back to the windscreen, which was made of safety glass, which prevented the injuries received by the passengers from being more serious than they were. • The bridge is the)one over which the Manawatu main line passes.-. Another ibridge with similar concrete supports is in the neighbourhood off Ngahauranga, some distance further along' the road. The Ngahauranga bridge is equipped with flashing lights and the Kaiwarra bridge has a permanent light which has been in position for many years.
