MARKETING OF FRUIT
COMMITTEE HEARS EVIDENCE.. By Telegraph.—Press 'Association, Wellington,' Hast Night. Further evidence was taken to-day before' the Industries and Cbriimereb Committee of the House with regard to the marketing of fruit and vegetables. One witness was Mr. Staley, secretary of the Auckland retail fruiterers, who testified with regard to dishonest packing and supported grading and standardisation. He condemned the practice of silent bidding. Questioned with regard to the Chinese hold on retailing, he said the Chinese standard of living was much lower than the white man’s, and so the Chinese were at an advantage. Despite their cheaper labour they charged just as much for fruit. Mr. W. A. Tate gave evidence on behalf of the New Zealand growers and submitted the following chain of efforts as necessary to put the industry on a sure footing 1 . A bureau of statistics, standardisation, a central board to ensure the regulation of quantities and distribution to markets requiring ! supplies, provincial boards acting as agents of the control boarrt and advertising.
