LORD PASSFIELD SPEAKS TO JAVA DUTCH AND BRITISH INTERESTS. British Wireless. Rugby, Aug. 28. Sir Cecil Clementi, Governor of the Straits Settlements, who is paying a visit to the Netherlands Indian Government, spoke by wireless telephone from Java to Lord Bassfield, the Colonial Secretary, at the Colonial Office this morning. This, is the first time a Colonial Secretary has communicated with the Far East by telephone from the Colonial Office, although Mr. L. C. M. S. Amery at the House of Commons spoke to Sir Ormsby-Gore, the Colonial Undersecretary, in Java two years ago. Lord Bassfield’ expressed appreciation of the opportunity given him by the Netherlands Indian Government. He remarked that the Empires of ’ the Netherlands and,Britain had many similar problems,’ and many grounds- for co-operation in the East, and he welcomed the invitation to Sir Cecil to visit the Governor-General of Java, ami hoped that future years might see further mutual understanding between the Dutch and British authorities overseas. Sir Cecil said he had had a wonderful reception in Java, and had been much struck by the remarkable developments there.
