CONFERENCE OF HARRIERS

AUSTRALIAN VISIT PROPOSED. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Wellington, Last Night. With official recognition given for the first time by the council of the New Zealand Amateur Athletic Association, a conference of harrier delegates was held to-night on the eve of the New Zealand cross-country championship. Among the remits passed, which have the force of recommendations only, was one to the effect that the 1931 New Zealand cross-country championship should be conducted by the Canterbury centre. This was opposed to an Auckland remit aimed at securing the event for the northern centre. The latter remit, however, was lost by five votes to four.

In the discussion the position of Auckland and Otago wars dwelt upon. Both are faced generally with the necessity of sending their tea urn a long distance to compete. The conference was of the opinion that the event should take place in each island alternately. . A recommendation to the council that a New Zealand team should be sent to Australia . was carried unanimously. Time was spent in discussing ways and means, and Mr. G. L. Austin (Canterbury) suggested that if £3OO were required for such a project the three main centres (Wellington, Canterbury and Otago) should be called uptm for £75 each and the remaining centres (Wanganui and Auckland) for £37 10s each, the council to contribute if it found itself in a position to do so, and a refund to the centres might thus be possible. Mr. Austin’s suggestion was adopted by the conference. A resolution of congratulation to J. W. Savidan and S. A. Lay on their outstanding success at the Empire Games was carried.

Delegates frun Auckland, Wanganui, Wellington,. Canterbury and Otago were present and the conference was presided over by Mr. A. A. Nattrass, one of the Wellington delegates. Mr. L. A. piracy, .secretary to the New Zealand Council, acted as secretary. t i
