WELLINGTON' BEATS MANAWATU.

The North Island secondary schools’ Soccer tournament opened to-day in bed Weather, the match between Wellington and Manawatu at the Basin Reserve being played in pouring rain. From the start Wellington had the advantage of being a team of bigger boys, who had al6O°more experience of the game. It was very one-sided, the Manawatu boys beina on the defence' the whole time. Their. passing was not strong enough, and the Wellington defender® were too powerful for the small Manawatu forwards to get by. Cameron, the Wellington goal-keeper, only touched the ball once in the first epell and was not seriously tried out in the second half. Kendall, in goal, was the shining light -of the visitors, even though 15° goals were scored against him,°for he made many excellent saves. Smith and Hamill were the star performers in the Wellington forwards, scoring seven and five goals respectively, and McDermott three. The. Auckland juniors meet Wellington juniors to-morrow and later Auckland seniors play Wellington seniors.
