HEAT INDUSTRY OUTPUT

INCREASED • PRODUCTION ,J ; ' Fl ' f POTENTIAL SOURCE OF DANGER VIEWS OF LEADING FARMERS. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Wellington, Last Night. The annual meeting of the delegates comprising the electoral committee of the New Zealand Meat Producers’ Board was field to-day, Mr. D. Jones, MJ\j presiding. The adoption of the annual report and, balance-sheet was seconded by Mr. J, H. Joll (Havelock North), who said that unless the board was careful farmers would not maintain their present rate of output. They felt if they were asked to exert themselves and produce more and more they were surely entitled to a little more for their products. Referring to the American tariff, Mr. Joll said that he would like to have an expression of opinion from the board as to whether New Zealand should not retaliate to a greater extent than at present. Mr. E. R. Black (Gisborne), raised' the question whether the board should not consider exercising greater care in regard to grading at freezing works. The chairman said it had been found that freezing works invariably exceeded the standard set. It was not considered that the number of officers should be increased. While he was abroad ho did ,not s 'find one meat’man who took exception to the grading. The board had the matter of misshapen carcases under consideration and intended to tighten up the restrictions. -i Mr. R. M. Morten (Tai Tapu) said that. he was Informed that. the. supervision of the uploading of New Zealand meat at Home last year was very unsatisfactory. Some English, firms were so dissatisfied with the supervision that, they employed their own men. .. > Mr. Jones replied that he found at Home that the companies met any corn-* plaints very fairly. They were doing; their work exceedingly well. Mr. J. Trotter (Fairlie) suggested that something might be done to lighten the cost in ' New Zealand to the; producer. , . j

MILLION AND A HALF MORE LAMBS

Mr. L. R. C. Macfarlane (Culverden) said next year there would be a million and a half more lambs to sell. The result would be that an endeavour would be made to get second quality lambs away. Farmers had spent tremendous sums in getting extra production, ■ and the chances were that some of the farms would go back. In addition there was a lot more disease than ever before. Rigid restrictions would be necessary next year regarding the exporting of lambs. Mr. J. Begg (Dunedin) thought the increased production was a matter for congratulation. There might be cases of over-stocking, but they were not general. Mr. G. A. M. Macdonald (Orari) referred to the handling of stock by the Railway Department, and suggested that representations be made to have greater care exercised. Mr. Jones said the matter would be taken up with the department. On tho question of over-production he would not like it to go from the meeting that increased production was not going to pay. He held the view that there was. room for a great deal more production. In regard to the question of bulk purchase, Mr. Jones said '.that there were very grave possibilities about the system, which would have to be very carefully watched before New Zealand agreed to it. The opinion was expressed by Mr. A. V. S. Reed (Napier) that the producers had not received t'he assistance they were entitled to from the present Government, or any previous Government, to Bring down the costs of shipping meat and wool.

A question was asked as to whether the board had endeavoured to open up trade with such countries as Japan. The main difficulty was freight, said Mr. Jones. Australia was in a much better position to supply Japan than was New Zealand. Another aspect was that Manchuria had a considerable number of sheep. It was impossible to compete with that country. - So far as the East was concerned there w e no shipping services which could be of value.
