AMERICA BEATS EMPIRE BETTER IN FIELD EVENTS HONOUR TO NEW ZEALAND By Telegraph—Press Assn. —Copyright. Rec. 7 p.m. New York, Aug. 27. The international athletic tournament between the British Empire and the United States took place to-day at Soldier Field, Chicago. The United States defeated the Empire by nine events to five. There was thrilling competition, resulting in fine performances, and eight records were broken. The games were watched by 35,090 spectators. Details are:— 440 Yards Relay Race. United States (Sweet, Leland, Simpson and Tolan) beat British Empire (Miller, Legg, Page and Fitzpatrick) by 10 yards. One Mile Relay Race. British Empire (Bragwin, Golding, Walters and Wilson) beat United States (Williamson, Long, Lewie and Williams) in 3min 16 l-ssec. Williamson outraced Bragwin by three yards, but Long was unable to stand off a rush by Golding, who gave the Empire a two yards margin. Walters maintained the lead against Lewie, and Wilson added a yard against Williams. Bragwin dropped the baton near the finish of his quarter and the others ran without it, but there was no protest. 440 Yards Hurdles Relay.
United States (Sentman, Hatfield, Kastor and Anderson) beat British Empire (Davies, Viljoen, Gaby and Lord Burghley). in 59isec. Four Mile Relay Race
British Empire (Cornea, Walters, Whyte and Thomas) beat United'States (Venzke, Rekers, Kiser and Conger) in 17min 22 4-ssee. Venzke beat Cornes by two yards, and Walters beat Rekers by two yards. Kiser moved ahead of Whyte at the half-mile mark and hung on until the stretch, when the Australian sprinted out, winning by a yard. Thomas was too much for Conger, the Empire winning by 70 yards. High Jump. United States (Marty, Burk and Lasallet) with an aggregate of 19ft 9Ain beat British Empire (Gordon, Stargiatt and Portland). Putting the Shot. United States (Brix, Bothert and Jessup) with an aggregate o.f 148 ft 7 1-Sin, beat British Empire (Hart, Howland and Herman) with 133 ft 9 3-Bin. Two Mile Relay Race. . British Empire (Chandler, «Townsend, Edwards and Hampson) beat United States in 7min 42 3-ssec. Two Mile Steeplechase. British Empire (Tathin, Leightwood, Morgan and Lord Burghley) beat United States in Smin 40 3-ssec. Three Mile Team Race. British Empire beat United States. Three Empire runners —Evanson, Winfield and Hillhouse —were first, second ami third, and McCluskey _ (United State) fourth. The winner's time was 14min 34see. United States (Bartlett, Demers and Welden) with an aggregate of 594 ft o|in, beat British Empire (Lay, Pilling and Hart) with 565 ft 6jin. S. A. Lay, with 206 ft 10-Jin, made the beat individual throw for either team. One Mile Medley! Race. United States (Bowen, Tolan, Simpson and Genung) beat British Empire (Wilson, Englehart, Fitzpatrick and Hampson). Pole Vault.
United States (Warne, Sturdy and Allen) with an aggregate of 38ft lOjin, beat British Empire (Pickard, Gilbert and Ford), with 35ft 4in. Broad Jump. United States (Bates, Martin and Fourth) with an aggregate of 69ft 5 l-Bin beat British Empire (Evans, Smith and Hillton) with 64ft 1 7-Bin. Throwing the Hammer. United States (Black, Wright and Flanagan) with an aggregate of 480 ft 0 3-Bin beat British Empire (Nokes, Smith and Murray) with 423 ft 9 3-Bin.
