SHIPPING SERVICE SUBSIDY
SOUTHERN OPINION DIVIDED. FARMERS’ UNION OPPOSED. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Invercargill, Last Night. Reiteration of the previous support extended to the claims for a Government subsidy for the South Island to Melbourne shipping service was expressed at a meeting of the Invercargill Chamber of Commerce this evening. The meeting strongly opposed the attitude of the Southland executive of the Farmers’ Union in urging the -v.ithdrawal of the subsidy and it was stated that the farmers’ motion appeared to have been passed without careful consideration. The Bluff Harbour Board passed the following resolution: "That the board considers the Bluff-Melbourne service a very important matter to the board and to the South Island as a whole and the maintenance of the service of vital importance to the financial position of the board. Members deprecate the attitude taken by the Farmers’ Union and ask that? the union reconsiders its decision.”
