The classes were well filled with a good standard of entries. A feature was the wood-wind class for competitors under 18 years. There were nine entries, eight being from Hawera, and not one was poor. The judge, Mr. Dixon, said it was wonderful to receive so many entries in this class, the work in which was of such splendid quality. There were great opportunities for advancement for those young men to whom he had listened. He paid a tribute to the work being done in Hawera. The standard of work of the first and second performers was very high. To D. Rawson, the winner, he had given 92 marks. James Henson had also scored well and all the others except bne, who was very close up, he had highly commended with over ; 80 marks. The impromptu speech added to the variety of the evening session. On Wednesday evening Mr. F. W. Horner introduced the dancing judge, Miss Vyner, Wellington. Miss Vyner said the folk-dancing class was a most suitable one for children. The winners’ performance was one of the most delightful she had seen and she liked the inclusion of small boys. The effect of folk-dancing was enhanced by the puppyish clumsiness of young males and if the dance had been done by the Russian ballet the right effect would not have been obtained. “It is a mistake to evolve a musical comedy, cabaret style,” said Miss Vyner, referring to the skipping dance. Head movements and affectation should be avoided and she appealed to teachers not to tell pupils to smile,

Competitors in the clog dance showed considerable promise though, Miss Vyner added, affectation was again noticeable. The elocution judge, Mr, J. W. Bailey, said the costuming was again beautiful.

Voices in the unison singing, commented Mr. Dixon, were very sweet. He was pleased with the instrumental trios for in every case the playing was wonderfully good. He remarked favourably on tlie oboe, clarinet and piano trio which was most unusual. Wood wind playing was to be encouraged. The girl’s song (14’and under 18 years) was a very good class and the winner, Miss O. Hancock, had a remarkably fine voice for her age. If she was an earnest student she should make a first-class professional singer. “I hope she does not get a ‘swelled head/” added Mr. Dixon, “for she has a long way to go and years of hard work.” “It is not my object to give a false impression,” said Mr. Dixon. “I have been asked about my comments on Tuesday night but my remarks are perfectly sincere. I want you to feel that they are not flattery.” . 1 : ; : t j.- (. . l h . h.I
