HUNTING PERSONALITY
RETIREMENT OF MR. A. SELBY. Mr. Ar'litur Selby, who has been clerk of the course at Ellerslie for the Auckland Racing Club for 36 years, states the New Zealand Herald. He has also acted for the Auckland Trotting Club at Alexandra Bark for 16 or 17 years and for the Takapuna Jockey Club for 25 or 26 years, and the Avondale Jockey Club for *36 years. All these positions he is now relinquishing. From hie childhood Mr. Selby has been intimately connected with horses and farming. Born near Sevonoak*, Kent, in 1845, he became at an early age manager of his father’s farm and then manager of a large racing establishment, of which eventually he became the proprietor. Later, selling out his English interests, he came to New Zealand and became part-owner of ■ a block of land in the Forty-mile Bush, remaining there until 1863. In that'-year he removed to Auckland, settling at Otahuhu. Mr. Selby was appointed huntsman to the Pakuranga Hunt in 1994 and filled the position for 22 years. He was an annual competitor in the hunters’ event* at the Auckland Agricultural and Pastoral Association’s shows. Mr. Selby’s horse Rainbow won the Avondale Hunt Steeplechase in 1898. ■ *. « « « Mr. H. Coyle appears to have assessed Royal Finance rather highly in the Urenui Handicap at the Taranaki Hunt Chib’s meeting, and the Paper Money filly is asked to give 7, 9 and 9 lb. respectively to Gowanlca, Monaloff, and Tentcall. Gowanlea has won two good hack races; Monaloff one and run , six seconds; Tentcall two win* and four seconds. Considering that Royal Finance has won only a division of a maiden handicap it looks as if her weight had been allocated on her reputation.
