THE FINAL GALLOPS

YESTERDAY MORNING'S WORK ANNOYER’S GOOD SIX FURLONGS. ORAPAI FOUND SLIGHTLY' AMISS. There was a cold wind blowing yesterday morning at New Plymouth, when the final gallops for the Hunt Club races were given on a holding track. Most fast work was done on the outside of the course proper, with the flags out 60 feet. Although the steeplechase fences are practically completed, they were not open, and Razor and Just John were stopped after going over three of the obstacles. The best six furlongs of the morning was credited to Annoyer, who went very freely. Royal Finance ran a nice five furlongs and several two-year-olds showed exceptional brilliance under the conditions. The hunter Nimblefoot was given a long gallop over a mile and three furlongs and acquitted himself well. Potency was another hunter to show up. There was some consternation when it was found that Orapai was slightly lame behind, but it is hoped to have him right again by tomorrow. Spanish King (Cochran) was given half pace work on the inner. Miss Chatter (McLeod) and Melissa (Rangi) were trotted on the inner. Lady Quex (Goulsbro) did not favour the going in her quarter mile sprint, which took 29 4-ssec. Tangiroa (O'Brien) and Gibraltar (C. Goulsbro) moved away nicely from the three furlongs peg, the two-year-old having a neck to spare passing the post in 41 3-ssec. Easter Time (Goulsbro) skipped home brilliantly from the two furlongs in 27 2-ssec. Orapai (O’Brien) was trotted on the inner grass. Orapai is slightly lame behind, but the trouble is not thought to be serious. Gold Gleam (Brown) trotted around the inner.

A light task was allotted Hinepuni (George). Manly (Todd) did two rounds at solid three-quarter pace on the inner. Huirangi Girl (Duggan) and Lady June (Todd) were sent over ten furlongs, the latter having a dozen lengths

in at the start. Lady June went freely and had five ' lengths to spare at the finish, the last mile taking 2mih. 3sec. Huirangi Girl ran the full distance in 2min. 33sec. Green Patch (Cochran) had Rapai (O'Brien) well beaten in a three-furlong flutter, which took 42sec. Royal Finance (Goulsbro) galloped particularly well to beat Lady Lulu (George) home by five lengths from the five furlong peg in Imin. 7-Jsec. Te Atiawa (O’Brien) finished on much better than usual over three furlongs in 41sec. Waitaunaha (Brown) .worked on the inner. Belle Star (Cochran) strode along freely on the inner. . Nimblefoot (O’Brien) finished on surprisingly well over eleven furlongs run in 2min. 48sec. — a. really good gallop. Potency (Goulsbro) and Moerangi (Duggan) jumped off together from the seven furlong post. The first half-mile was cut out in 55sec., Potency entering the straight well clear of his companion to win by six lengths pulling up in the good time of Imin. 40 3-ssec. Just John (Brown) and Razor (Mr. Stockman) went over’ the post-and-rails and double brush. Razor hit the first, but .went over the double well, Just John taking all the fences nicely. The hunters were not allowed to continue jumping. ■Side Shot (Goulsbro) finished clear of Silvereine (Duggan) over a circuit, the last - six taking Imin. 27sec. With Brown in the saddle, Side Shot jumped the hencoop twice faultlessly. Ngawhaa (Rennie) did a round at a nice three-quarter pace. He was to have been schooled. Cornerman (McLeod) was on the inner, but nevertheless showed a nice turn of speed to beat Sparkling Morn (C. Goulsbro) home by half a length over three furlongs run in 40 l-osec. Puawhato (R. E. Thompson) was given a circuit at three-quarter pace. Annoyer (Goulsbro) and Crennatown (Goulsbro) recorded a smart effort over six furlongs run in Imin. 23sec. Crennatown had the better of the start and the first two were run in 26sec. Annoyer finished particularly well to win by a half head. Screed (Goulsbro) ran four furlongs in sGsec. A-hunting all must go—on Saturday. Kapai te Orapai tomorrow. Looks “pie.” • Huntsmen are a contented lot. They never wish to be “better off.”
