THE TREATMENT OF DOGS

LECTURE BY MR. R. B. WOOD. A comprehensive lecture on the care and handling of doge in a humane manner was given last night to the members of the New Plymouth Kennel Club by Mr. R. B. Wood, M.R.C.V.S; The president of the club, Mr. A. T. Moore, presided over a good attendance. At the beginning of the lecture, Mr. Wood dealt with the destruction of small animals with chloroform. Simple methods of giving medicine to dogs were shown. Regarding the feeding of dogs, the speaker was emphatic that dogs should be fed only once in 24 hours. A starvation period for treatment for worms was between 48 and 72 hours. There were no set rules for the amount of food given to a dog. Mr. Wood suggested that to find out the quantity a dog required a simple way was to give the dog double the amount and when it turned its back on the food the owner could deduce the quantity th A dog required. He urged that all dogs be treated every three months for worms, pointing out the great loss to the farming industry through the sheep and lamb livers being affected with hydatids. Mr. Wood spoke of the disappointment of the failure of the serum made to prevent distemper. Distemper was caused hy a germ like influenza in a human victim. Distemper was a very infectious disease and kennels of dogs found to be so affected should be burned. Fleas were another trouble experienced with dogs. The cleaner a dog was kept the less liable he was to be troubled with fleas, and it was advisable to lay a slab of asphalt around the kennel, which should be raised above the ground.
