WOMEN’S GOLF TITLE
AUSTRALIAN CONTEST BEGINS. By Telegraph --Press Assn. —Copyright. Rec. 12.30 a.m. Melbourne, Aug. -27. The women’s golf championship of Australia began to-day at the Commonwealth links in ideal weather. r lhe competing players are from four States and New Zealand. Miss L. Wray, holder of the title, and Mrs. Gathouse, a former champion, are among the competitors. The first of the two qualifying rounds was played to-day. The New Zealander Miss Olive Kaye made an impressive appearance with a round of 83, which included' an eight at the simple fifth hole, where she pulled her drive among some trees. She had to play left-hand-ed in an endeavour to recover and wasted three strokes. She took a six at the next hole and another at the seventh.
Miss Leslie Bailey (Victoria) led at the-end of the round with 80, Miss Kaye followed with her 83, and then came '.Miss Susie Tolhurst 84, Mrs. Russell and Miss Wray 86, and Miss Rathbone (New Zealand) 89.
